THE Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Defence Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, met for the first time to look into the uplinking and downlinking policy for television channels.

The meeting, however, was inconclusive due to the absence of a few key Ministers.

The GoM was set up primarily to formulate a policy for television channels beaming in and out of India.

Issues include mandatory sharing of telecast feeds of events of national importance with Prasar Bharati.

Cricket has been at the centre of this controversy with private sports channels reluctant to share with Doordarshan.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had earlier suggested that channels beaming into India should be registered not only as channels but also as companies.
