`The Third Party Insurance is a compulsory cover as per the Motor Vehicles Act and cannot be denied by any insurer to any vehicle having a valid fitness certificate.'

Hyderabad , Aug. 2

THE Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has directed all the non-life insurance players to strictly ensure that all the operating offices accept motor third party insurance proposals without any fail.

The regulator has also made it clear to the general insurers that the third party insurance is a compulsory cover as per the Motor Vehicles Act, and it cannot be denied by any insurance player to any vehicle that has a valid fitness certificate.

The IRDA Chairman, Mr C.S. Rao, issued the fresh directives following complaints regarding rejection of motor third party proposals by some offices of the insurance companies.

"The Authority is still receiving complaints regarding non-acceptance of motor third party proposals by certain offices of the insurance companies. As you may be aware, the Third Party Insurance is a compulsory cover as per the Motor Vehicles Act and cannot be denied by any insurer to any vehicle having a valid fitness certificate," the IRDA Chairman said.

In this connection, the regulator has also drawn the attention of insurance players to the circular of Tariff Advisory Committee (TAC) dated June 20, 2003.
