Education Move to streamline technical education in AP Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Aug 2 THE State Government has embarked on a process to further streamline the technical education system, including introduction of crash courses for surveyors in the polytechnics. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, while reviewing the technical education system in the State, directed the Technical Education Department to wind up certain courses that have no employment potential and suggested introduction of new courses by converting sanctioned posts and redeployment of staff. A proposal was submitted to Finance Department for filling up of 162 posts of lecturers and 192 workshop instructors and assistants. The matter is pending before the Implementation Committee. The Director of Technical Education, Mr G. Anantha Ramu, said that the community polytechnic scheme is being implemented effectively in 65 polytechnics to develop employable skills among rural educated unemployed youth. In all, 40,000 youth were trained in the State in 2004-05 against 29,250 in the previous year. The department has tied up with JNTU and NIFT aimed at introducing new programmes in hotel management and fashion designing. The Government has initiated a Rs 152- crore Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme with World Bank assistance. During 2005-06, Rs 55 crore was provided and the department is expediting video conferencing and digital library facilities. Following a court verdict in June, the All India Council for Technical Education has approved 16 new engineering colleges, 11 B. Pharmacy colleges and one MBA college. This has added 3,840 seats in engineering, 660 seats in B. Pharmacy and 60 seats in MBA. The State has 250 engineering colleges with 83,153 seats, 315 MCA colleges (16,700 seats), 219 MBA colleges (13,050 seats) and 61 B. Pharm colleges (3,600 students).
