Climate & Weather Fresh rain spell in North likely from Saturday Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 4 WEDNESDAY'S well-marked low-pressure area over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh has been tracking a north-northwest course and has hurtled into a position over Jharkhand and adjoining north-interior Orissa on Thursday afternoon. Though showing signs of weakening already, the system is expected to endure so long as to set up an interaction with the approaching disturbance, which has already triggered some rains in the national capital and the immediate neighbourhood. The wet session here will prolong over the next 2-3 days.
Godsend for north
Speaking to Business Line, Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Director, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), said the slightly northward progression of the well-marked `low' is a godsend for eastern Uttar Pradesh and parts of Bihar which badly need rain during this phase of the monsoon. Central and peninsular India have received their quota of rain, in many cases even more, and the current spell in the north and the northwest will go a long way in ensuring more equitable distribution of rain. The western disturbance in the form of a trough in the upper-level westerly flow is expected to cross into the northwest by Friday. The possible interaction with the monsoon system will result in increased rainfall activity in many parts of the north and northwest India, namely Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, parts of Haryana (including Delhi), western parts of Bihar and north Madhya Pradesh beginning Saturday.
`Low' in full cry
According to the weather update and forecast by the NCMRWF, the well-marked `low' has already caused moderate to heavy rainfall in Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Heading further northwest, the system will bring widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls over Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh during the next two days. Meanwhile, the other low-pressure area over east Rajasthan and neighbourhood has become less marked and hence the rainfall activity over Gujarat and Rajasthan is expected to decrease further. Across the peninsula, the monsoon flows have remained strong during the past few days and the offshore trough from Goa to Karnataka coast has continued to persist. The model predictions suggest that these flows may remain strong for another 2-3 days leading to fairly widespread rain with isolated heavy falls along Konkan, Goa and Karnataka coast. Towards the east and the northeast, scattered rainfall is likely over east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the next two days and scattered to fairly widespread over the north-eastern States. Subsequently, the rainfall activity over these areas is likely to enhance.
Over central region, too
In central India, Jharkhand and adjoining Orissa, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha are likely to receive fairly widespread rains during next two days. Subsequently, north Madhya Pradesh is also likely to receive fairly widespread rains. Towards the south, fairly widespread rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 2-3 days with isolated heavy falls in coastal Karnataka. The rest of the region is likely to receive isolated to scattered rains during this period. In the west, scattered rainfall is expected in areas outside of Gujarat and Rajasthan during the next 2-3 days, except in Konkan and Goa and the remaining parts of Maharashtra, where fairly widespread rains with isolated heavy falls is likely during the next 3-4 days.
