Minister announces relief measures in Kolhapur

THE torrential rains lashing Maharashtra in the last few days devastated around 569 villages and seven tehsils in Kolhapur, Mr Harshvardhan Patil, Minister of State for Marketing and Employment Guarentee Scheme, said.
Talking to newspersons, he said the rains had claimed 13 lives. The Government was sanctioning relief of Rs 1 lakh to the families of the rain victims.
He said 27 villages had been cut off while 29 villages did not have power supply, with transformers under water. Military personnel were stationed in various locations for rescue operations.
About 3,500 tonnes of grains and 11 tanker-lorry loads of kerosene had been distributed in Kolhapur.
Mr Patil said of the about 3.62 lakh hectares of land under cultivation, 52,000 hectares had been affected. Of this, 30,000 hectares was under sugarcane, 7,000 paddy, 5,000 hectares under soyabean and 10,000 hectares for other crops.
Asked for estimates of rain damage, he said since an assessment was on, it would be difficult to give a number at this point.
He said milk distribution by the three major milk supplying sanghs, Warana, Gokul and Mayur, had been disrupted. Measures were under way to resume distribution.
The State Government had also undertaken a massive programme to vaccinate animals so as to prevent the outbreak of diseases.
