New Delhi , Aug. 4

THE Communications and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Thursday presented the country's cheapest personal computer priced lower than Rs 10,000 to the Chairperson of National Advisory Council, Ms Sonia Gandhi. The computer has been developed by HCL Infosystems.

"This is a first step to bring affordable PCs to the masses and it will help in bridging the digital divide," Mr Maran said. The PC with a price tag of Rs 9,990, was launched earlier this week. Mr Maran hoped that other manufacturers would also reduce the price of PCs for bridging the digital divide.

The new PC runs on a Linux operating system, supports all standard applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, Web browsing, e-mails and audio video playback. It also comes with multilingual fonts, including Tamil.

The PC comes with a one GHZ processor, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB hard disk, 15 inch digital colour monitor, 52X optical drive, keyboard and scroll mouse. HCL has tied up with Taiwan-based Via for microprocessors and is the second company to launch a sub-Rs 10,000 machine in India. The Xentis group had also launched Aapna PC at a price little below Rs 10,000.
