A TASK force created by the Department of Biotechnology has evolved draft guidelines for stem cell research in the country and is set to finalise them within six to eight weeks.
Speaking to newspersons after the inauguration of the Centre for DNA Finger printing (CDFD) and Sun Microsystems Centre for Excellence in Medical Biotechnology, Dr M.K. Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, said that the Government is set to consult the National Institutes of Health, USA, which comprises a group of institutions in formulating these guidelines along with the Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr N.K. Ganguly.
These guidelines were framed after studying patterns from FDA and the National Academy of Sciences USA.
The task force in stem cell created by the Department of Biotechnology is headed by Dr D. Balasubramanian, who is now associated with the LV Prasad Eye Institute.
The Government is keen to encourage research work in proteomics through the National Programme on Proteomics. This would be through the creation of a network of institutions taking up work on certain specialised areas of research.
"We believe India has the potential to play a larger role in life sciences including research in the areas of proteomics and gene analysis. Focus on bioinformatics will enable companies to cut short drug research work. However, our experience shows that for any technology to be widely adopted it takes anywhere between 8-10 years," Dr Bhan explained.
