THE Union Cabinet has given its approval for adopting and signing the revised text of the Bangkok Agreement, which has been renamed as `Asia Pacific Trade Agreement'.
The revised Agreement would promote and enhance cooperation through trade liberalisation and better market access between its member States, official sources said.
The Bangkok Agreement, which is a preferential tariff arrangement, is an initiative under the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for trade expansion through exchange of tariff concessions among developing country members of the ESCAP region.
This agreement was signed on July 31, 1975. Since the Bangkok Agreement was signed in 1975, it was felt that the text needed amendments, taking into account the economic developments that have taken place since then. The member countries of the Agreement are Bangladesh, China, India, Republic of Korea, Lao People's Democratic Republic and Sri Lanka.
