Gitanjali group to set up SEZ in Hyderabad

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Aug. 6

THE Andhra Pradesh Government on Saturday allocated 200 acres of land to the Gitanjali group to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) for the gems and jewellery sector at Shamsabad (25 km from Hyderabad main city), at an investment of Rs 200 crore in the next two years.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, handed over the land allotment documents to Mr Mehul Choksi, Chairman of Gitanjali (Digico) group, which is a co-partner with the State Government for developing phase one of the SEZ project in Hyderabad.

This SEZ will be the third one catering to the gems and jewellery segment, after those at Santacruz (Mumbai) and Salt Lake (Kolkata).

"It is our privilege to partner with the Andhra Pradesh Government in setting up India's third gems and jewellery SEZ," Mr Choksi was quoted as saying in a release.

The proposed international airport is 7 km away from the SEZ and the national highway is at a close proximity of 6 km. The zone, once fully operational, will generate 50,000 new jobs and this might go up to two to three lakhs in due course. This would include jobs in designing, cutting, and polishing jewellery.

The SEZ will be a contemporary destination for manufacturers, businessmen and entrepreneurs in the gems and jewellery sector for both gold and diamond.

The facility will house cutting and polishing units, testing laboratories, certification centres, banks, merchandising centres and other services relevant to the trade, the release said.

The park will be centrally air-conditioned with a computerised intelligent building management system. It will feature all modern amenities and provide space for around 150 shops and commercial establishments.
