Centre asks States to clear mining licences applications fast

New Delhi , Aug. 6

THE Centre has asked State governments to clear applications for mining licences fast, and has set up a committee to study the need for increasing the maximum limit of prospecting licences and mining lease areas, the Mines Minister, Mr Sis Ram Ola, said today.

"The Centre is aware of the issues in the way of speedy clearance of applications for mining licences and has asked the State Governments to expedite the process," Mr Ola said after presenting the Environment, Social Awareness and Excellence Awards 2004-05.

He said investment in the mining sector was difficult to come by because of the high risk and long gestation period involved, according to a release.

"But the Centre is conscious that policy initiatives and legislative measures should be evolved with the changing times to draw more foreign direct investment into the sector," he added.

Mr Ola said the Planning Commission had constituted a study to analyse the mining laws of Australia, Canada, Brazil, Chile and Peru, and suggest steps to attract investment in the sector.

The Minister appreciated the suggestions made by the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries to have a uniform mining policy throughout the country.
