Letters Relief for Mumbai
sWith all the talk of pouring relief money into Mumbai, one cannot help but ask: Does Mumbai gets its due vis-à-vis the amount of taxes collected by the State government? This city gets funds for its upkeep from the State and Central Governments and the World Bank. But it appears that there is no accountability for the funds. Sixty per cent of the State taxes collected in Maharashtra are from Mumbai, but how much really comes back to be used where it is really needed? A classic example is the funds allotted for the widening of the Mithi River Rs 5,500 Crores was collected by the MMRDA to clean up, widen and beautify the river. Where the money went is a mystery, but it certainly was not used for its intended purpose. It is anyone's guess how much of the money disappeared into the black hole of corruption The need of the hour is to have a funds monitoring committee comprising retired bureaucrats of high integrity, prominent citizens and public-spirited NGOs.
