Petroleum Reliance finds gas in CBM block in M.P. Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 8 AFTER finding gas reserves in deep-sea blocks off the Andhra Pradesh and Orissa coast, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has now found gas in a coal block in Madhya Pradesh. This is the first time that coal bed methane (CBM) discovery has been made in the country on such a large scale. According to the Director General Hydrocarbons (DGH), Mr V.K. Sibal, the company has found gas between layers of coal in a mine in central India. RIL's this field has reserves of about 3.76 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas. The DGH has certified the commerciality of the gas. Regarding the production potential of the field, Mr Sibal said, the company would need to drill more wells before the potential is known. "Reliance will have to drill at least about 20 more wells to know how much gas can be produced," he said. Under normal circumstance it should not take a company more than a year to drill more wells, he said. The gas has been found between layers of coal seams in Sohagpur CBM blocks in Madhya Pradesh. RIL has informed the Government of the discovery in Sohagpur West and East blocks. CBM is primarily methane gas, which occurs in its natural state in coal or lignite bed seams. This is the first time that CBM discovery has been made in the country at such a large scale, he said. The Sohagpur blocks were awarded to RIL in 2002. Over the last one year, Reliance has drilled 12 information wells and 10 production test wells in the Sohagpur blocks. Incidentally, RIL, Chairman, Mr Mukesh D. Ambani at the recent annual general meeting had said the company was optimistic about commercially developing CBM by the 2009-10. Reliance is also developing CBM fields in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. In 2002, RIL had said that it has found as much as 14 TCF of gas in the Krishna Godavari basin.
