Events Pune's Either Or to hold expo on saris of South Our Bureau
A model showcases the `Magic of Looms'.
Pune , Aug. 9 SILKS from the South have always been a coveted part of a woman's wardrobe, but, now, Pune's Either Or, a store which specialises in all things offbeat and alternate, is all set to take shoppers with a yen for the fine threads from the South. This weekend the store will hold a three-day exhibition Magic of Looms in collaboration with Bangalore brand Tarunyaas, that will unveil a collection of saris woven by artisans from Chettinad, the south of Godavari, and Kanchipuram. "A yard of fabric spans our lineage, culture and heritage and is so fragile that an earthquake, flood or typhoon can erase centuries of craft knowledge," says Ritika of Either Or. "It is imperative that this heritage remains part of our lives and as consumers we are stakeholders in this activity, and, thus, responsible for its continuance." The exhibition will bring to Puneiites a collection of saris from Kanchipuram, the traditional Kandanghi sari from Chettinad and the Telia saris from the weavers of Andhra Pradesh's south Godavari region. "While saris from the South are perceived as either too simple or too rich for everyday use, what is striking about the collection we will present is the fact that they have been given a contemporary touch by innovation in colour, texture and fabric to suit the current trends. Women can wear these saris as corporate wear or just for a day out with friends," Ritika signs off. The store, incidentally, is known in the city for its innovation in presenting everyday products in a different light. Last year, for instance, it presented `Skirtology,' the ubiquitous skirt, found in every woman's wardrobe, with a new twist, new styles and completely new treatment.
