Hyderabad to host 4-day Nursery Mela

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug. 9

OVER 1,000 nurseries in Andhra Pradesh have recorded a turnover of Rs 375 crore, with well-known Kadiam nursery in East Godavari district earning Rs 150 crore.

The State had registered horticulture exports of Rs 400 crore last year and expected to grow at 20 per cent this year.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture, said the Horticulture Department would hold a four-day annual `Nursery Mela' at People's Plaza on the Necklace Road here.

Representatives of nurseries, bio-fertiliser and bio-pesticides companies, sellers of seeds and micro-irrigation equipment would set up about 100 stalls.

The department had been organising such melas for the last seven years. Representatives of nurseries from the neighbouring States too would set up stalls.

The State Government would make arrangements to bring at least 50 progressive farmers interested in nurseries from each district to the mela.

The Minister said the Government had earmarked Rs 53 crore of subsidy for encouraging fruit and flower cultivation in about 50,000 hectares.
