Off-shore Development GemStone Systems sets up Pune facility Our Bureau
Pune , Aug. 9 GEMSTONE Systems Inc, a company that provides data services solutions, has set up a development centre in Pune with a primary investment of $400,000. This is its first centre outside the US. Talking to newspersons, Mr Makarand Gokhale, General Manager, Engineering and Technology, GemStone Systems, said the centre would initially focus on the development of the core GemFire product line. He said the Pune team would also lead the development project for two new products, GemFire DB Accelerator and GemFire DB Virtualiser. These products are slated to hit the global market by mid 2007. Mr Makarand said the establishment of the Pune centre was planned in January 2004 on a build-operate-and-transfer model. Spread across 5,000 sq. ft., the centre has become operational with a workforce of 15 engineers, which will touch 25 in six months. Within the next 15 to 18 months of operation, the workforce would be close to 50, Mr Makarand added. Java experts and engineers will be recruited to support product development. Mr Makarand said the Pune centre would eventually become the headquarters for the company's Asia-Pacific business and it would focus on tie-ups with software companies in India and China. He said GemStone is already in talks with IBM for a product level agreement wherein products from both the companies would be integrated to form a customised solution for clients. As part of its expansion plans, GemStone will be providing 24x7 customer support from the Pune centre. The company will be investing close to $5 million during the next three to five years for the customer support facility. It is also in the process of setting up an office in London. GemStone Systems Inc, founded in 1982, is a privately held infrastructure software company that provides enterprise data fabric for data infrastructure managers and technical programme managers.
