Real Image plans to market digital cinema system in US

Chennai , Aug. 9

AFTER launching what it says is the world's first cinema network with a movie-on-demand feature, the Chennai-based Real Image Media Technologies is eyeing the US market.

The Rs 40-crore company recently delivered the movie-on-demand feature to Portugal's RedCine Network, a group of 20 theatres, through its Qube Digital Cinema System, which ensures that the theatre network can choose and download films from a central server.

The Qube system will enable theatres to receive encrypted digital content through a satellite or a fibre optic system, for instance. But before that, the content must be converted into the digital format, which ensures that the quality does not deteriorate over successive use.

The project, driven by the Portugal Government, primarily aims to promote and distribute Portuguese cinema by lowering distribution costs.

Real Image is in talks with a US company, and could possibly firm up a deal in the next few weeks, said Mr Jayendra Panchapakesan, Director. And being competitively priced will help Real Image in such a market, he said.

The company's digital cinema solution is already present in 32 theatres in Tamil Nadu. It plans to touch 100 theatres within a couple of months.

Mr Panchapakesan said he believes Andhra Pradesh could be an important market, and he plans to be in 150 cinemas by the end of the year.

While the cost of the equipment is around Rs 15 lakh, Real Image provides it for an upfront payment of Rs 3 lakh while collecting the rest from the distributor as a percentage of theatre collections.
