Shipping Flemingo gets nod for duty-free shop at Mumbai port N.K. Kurup
Mumbai , Aug. 10 FLEMINGO International has been chosen for running a duty-free shop at the cruise terminal at Mumbai Port, an official said. The duty-free shop is part of the facilities being created to make the recently built cruise terminal on par with such terminals in developed countries, the official added. The official also said Flemingo, an international duty-free chain that was already running duty-free outlets at the Chennai and Goa ports, was selected through the bidding process. Flemingo also operates duty-free outlets at several international airports in the country. The port authorities are trying to develop Mumbai, traditionally a cargo port, as a major link in international cruise shipping. This year, the port expects 15 international cruise liners to call at Mumbai, said Mr Gautham Day, Senior Docks Manger, who is in charge of the cruise terminal. "We want to ensure that the terminal has all facilities for international tourists," he added. Apart from the duty-free shop, the terminal has facilities such as food and snack counters and a modern communication centre. It should have the facility to handle at least 3,000 passengers at a time, said Mr Day. The duty-free shop is expected to commence operations by October, according to Mr Atul Ahuja, Director, Flemingo India. "We expect better sales at the Mumbai sea terminal than at Chennai and Goa." Besides cruise passengers, a large number of foreign crew arrives at Mumbai port every day. Right now they buy goods from the local shops. Mr Ahuja said Flamingo also had received permission to start duty-free shops at Vizag and Haldia. Mumbai port is also starting domestic cruise service from October 2. Star Cruise of Malaysia will be operating the service. To begin with, there will be three sailings per week: Sundays, Thursdays and Saturdays on Mumbai-Lakshadweep-Goa and Mumbai-Goa, and a one-night high sea night cruise, said an official with Star Cruise.
