Lifestyle Memorial walk A. Roy Chowdhury
After a High Court order, visitors have to buy daily entry ticket of Rs 4 to walk into the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata from Monday. The regular walkers at the memorial garden will have to pay Rs 100 for monthly tickets and Rs 1,000 for yearly tickets. On the death of Queen Victoria in January 1901, Lord Curzon, who was then Viceroy of India, placed before the public the question of setting up a fitting memorial to the Queen. The princes and people of India responded generously to his appeal for funds. King George V, then the Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921. Since then, there was no entry fee for visitors and walkers at Victoria Memorial.
