Govt urged to enforce barcoding

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 10

GS1 India, the international standards body, has urged the Ministry of Food Processing Industries to stipulate the use of barcodes in the Draft National Excise Policy.

Elaborating on the need for barcodes for the benefit of both the State and the consumer, Mr Ravi Mathur, CEO, GS1 India, said, "Barcoding enables 100 per cent tracking of sales at retail outlets through compulsory barcode scanning. This ensures that no unauthorised sale takes place and thus plugs State revenue leakages."

Barcoding has assumed significance also on account of its unique track-and-trace feature, which facilitates the tracking of liquor supplies from the bonded warehouse till the sale at retail outlets.
