JNPT moves boxes through barges to prevent congestion

Mumbai , Aug. 11

JAWAHARLAL Nehru Port, in coordination with Concor and Customs, has started moving out import ICD boxes through barges via Mumbai port for onward transportation to ICD Delhi.

This is part of decisions taken at the meeting of the Container Coordination Committee on August 2 to pre-empt congestion build-up at the port.

According to JNPT officials, during the last six days, five barges, with a capacity of 152 TEUs (twentyfoot equivalent unit) each, have been handled, facilitating evacuation of 760 TEUs from JN Port. Efforts are being made to run barges on a regular basis from both the terminals, including the P & O-operated Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT).

In addition to this, action has been initiated to move out import ICD boxes by road to Mulund from the port for onward transportation to ICD Delhi. In all, 452 TEUs have been transported by road from the port to Mulund.

Railways have also restored partial services from August 7 and during the last four days, 11 rakes have been handled from both the terminals, resulting in the evacuation of 990 TEUs. With respite from rains, the local CFSs (container freight stations) are limping back to normalcy.
