Tea Kanan Devan's white tea fetches Rs 1,601 a kg C. J. Punnathara
Kochi , Aug. 11 WHITE tea grown in the estates of the Kanan Devan Hills Plantation Company has fetched the highest price among all the high-range teas that have been sold at the auctions. Mr T. V. Alexander, Managing Director of KDHP Company, told Business Line that "this invoice of premium white tea manufactured under the Kundaly mark of KDHP Company was sold by M/s Forbes, Ewart and Figgis at a price of Rs 1,601 a kg. This is the highest price realised for any type of tea grown in the high ranges." White tea, otherwise called silvery tips, is a unique form of tea in which the buds of specific tea clones are plucked separately and subjected to a minimum amount of processing. The diligent operation involves careful plucking and withering of tea-leaves under controlled conditions and sorting and drying in bamboo baskets under low temperatures. The absence of firing and shaping in the white tea process results in many delicate shapes and offer a unique and lingering taste. "The full effect of white tea can only be achieved by chewing them directly. White tea brews into a pale sunset colour and has none of the grassy undertones often associated with green tea. The lack of harshness even after prolonged brewing makes it a particularly premium tea," Mr Alexander said. The first lot sold was for a quantity of 25 kg. White tea production will not only continue, but given the overwhelming response, production will be stepped up in the coming months, Mr Alexander said.
