Tourism Variety - Events Hectic Sept for Kerala Tourism Sankar Radhakrishnan
Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 11 FOR Kerala Tourism, September is a hectic month with several important events on the cards. The first would be the Malabar Tourism and Travel Mart from September 1-4, which was the second of its kind and will be held in Kozhikode and Wayanad, said Mr B. Suman, Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. Targeted at both international and domestic players in the travel industry, the event seeks to promote the varied tourist experiences that Kerala's Malabar region offers. The response to this year's event has been extremely good, with over 70 international buyers registering, he said. The success of the previous Malabar Travel Mart called Mystiques of Malabar led to the emergence of areas such as Wayanad and Palakkad as tourist destinations, he added. Palakkad, for instance, was growing into an important destination for ayurveda holidays, he pointed out. Another important occasion on Kerala Tourism's event map is the Travel Film Festival scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram from September 9. The three-day film festival is organised by Kerala Tourism, Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies, and the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. Besides screenings of travel films, the festival will include a seminar, Mr Suman said. The tourism department is also gearing up for the India International Boat Show to be held in Kochi from September 30. Several well-known international boating magazines are supporting this year's boat show, he said. The event has already generated a great deal of interest, and the response seemed set to exceed last year's showing, he added. In 2004, over 65 exhibitors from across the world participated in the India International Boat Show, which is estimated to have generated business worth several million dollars. According to Mr Suman, the tourism department also plans `Onam week' celebrations in three cities Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. This would be a first for Kochi and Kozhikode. Each city would receive Rs 25 lakh to organise the `Onam week' celebrations, he added.
