THE Karnataka Government should give priority for establishing power generation plants in the State, according to the State Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Mr G.N. Nagaraj.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, he said that setting up of more power plants would help tackle power shortage in the State. However, priority should be given for the establishment of hydroelectric units.

Stating that the private companies could be given an opportunity to produce power in the State, he said they should supply power to the Government at affordable rates. The Government should look into the price factor of the power produced by them. The private power plants should not affect the environment, he said.

To a query on the opposition to the proposed thermal power plant in Udupi district, he said that people of the region should be educated about the plant. The company should also adhere to all environmental norms.

Petro price hike: He urged the Centre to bring down excise duty and sales tax on petroleum products to avoid further price hike. In addition to this, it could also think of establishing a price stabilisation fund for petroleum products. The country should de-link itself from the international petroleum-pricing pattern, he said, adding that it should have its own pricing system.
