Mining & Quarrying CITU opposes bauxite mining in Vizag dist Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Aug. 14 THE memorandum of understanding signed by the State Government with the Jindal group for bauxite mining in the agency (tribal) area of Visakhapatnam district is fraught with peril for the people of the region and it will have adverse ecological impact on four to five coastal districts, according to Dr M. Babu Rao, Member of Parliament from Bhadrachalam. At a press meet here on Sunday, Dr Babu Rao and Mr Narsinga Rao, CITU leader, said the State Government had signed the MoU unilaterally and it was violative of the provision (1/70) of the Land Transfer Act. They said the CITU would organise "pada yatra'' in the area to educate the Girijans and mobilise public opinion against the Government move. They alleged the Government was resorting to a misinformation campaign telling the Girijans that bauxite mining would lead to prosperity and more jobs for them. "The rivers and rivulets in the area such as the Gostani, Sileru and Tandava will be polluted and even the groundwater sources will be contaminated. Five districts from Srikakulam to West Godavari will be affected," said Dr Babu Rao and urged the Government to give up the move. Mr Narsinga Rao, CITU leader, said a seminar would be organised here on September 4 to educate the public on the perils of bauxite mining.
