Hyderabad , Aug 15 MILLER & Smith Foods Inc, a global supplier of frozen fruit and concentrates that imports for around $30 million from India, wants to expand its basket of products. The company is looking at honey, skimmed milk and juice concentrates as potential items to be imported from India and supplied to its worldwide customers, according to Mr Milind Pandit, a senior executive based in Ontario, Canada. At present, Miller & Smith wassourcing different fruit products, such as gherkin (tender cucumber), tropical pulp from guava and mango, frozen fruit such as sliced mango, and apple juice concentrate, he told Business Line here. The $90-million turnover company procured these items for export to the US, Canada, Russia and East European countries. China was a major competitor for sourcing fruit and other food products to meet the demands of western countries, he said. In India, Miller & Smith had an affiliate, Aarco Exim Ltd, based in Mumbai. Through it, the companyhas identified suppliers in different parts of the country to procure the raw material or finished product and ship it to the US or Canada. Mr Pandit, who was in Hyderabad to inaugurate a gherkin-processing unit of Jupally Agro Products, with whom it entered into a buyback arrangement, said: "We are also exploring the import of marinated mushrooms from India." The company, which regularly imports alphonso mango pulp, plans to buy juice concentrates of apple, pineapple and grape. At present, Miller & Smith buys huge quantities of apple juice concentrate from China. For instance, if the import of apple juice is five containers from India, it would be 300 from China. Strawberry and tomato paste were other items imported from China, he said.
