Mangalore , Aug. 15

THE Karnataka Government has handed over 189 acres of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the expansion of Mangalore airport.

The AAI has taken up the construction of second runway and other works in the first phase, according to the Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister, Mr Jabbar Khan Honnali.

Delivering the Independence Day speech here on Monday, he said that acquisition of additional 158.33 acres is in progress for the expansion work.

The Government will spend Rs 12.79 crore for rehabilitation of the displaced families. The Government has already released Rs 3 crore for rehabilitation work. Mr Honnali said that the aim of the expansion is to upgrade Mangalore airport to international status.

He said that the National Highways Authority of India had called for tenders for converting the Surathkal-B.C. Road stretch of road to a four-lane national highway. The Ircon International, which has been awarded the project, will take up this work at a cost of Rs 168.21 crore.

Mr Honnali said that computerisation of land records is in progress in all the taluks of the district.

Stating that 1.52 lakh families in the district have been identified as those living below poverty line, he promised to issue ration cards to them at the earliest.

The Minister said that 2.07 lakh students in the district are being benefited by `Akshara Dasoha' — the mid-day meal scheme of the Government. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness is assisting the Government in providing this facility in 29 government schools of the district, he added.
