Naxals kill MLA, his son and eight others

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug.15

NAXALITES shot dead a senior ruling Congress party MLA, Mr Narsi Reddy, his son and eight others, including a Municipal Commissioner, while injuring 10 others in Mahbubnagar district of the State today.

Four Maoists wielding AK-47 guns attacked the MLA when he was inaugurating a school building near Narayanpet, about 120 km from Hyderabad, coinciding with the Independence Day celebrations.

While Narsi Reddy, aged about 75, and three time-MLA and seven others died on the spot, Mr Reddy's son Venkateshwar and another person succumbed to injuries later. Ten others, injured in the ghastly attack, are undergoing treatment.

Reacting to the incident, before going to the scene of crime, the Chief Minister, Dr.Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said such ghastly incidents and acts by the Naxalites would force the Government to react strongly.

When reporters asked him whether the Government would reimpose the ban on Maoists, Dr Reddy said an appropriate decision would be taken after holding discussions.

Today's killing of a ruling party legislator and others, is expected to be a major blow for any prospects of resumption of talks between the Maoists and the State Government. There has been an escalation in violence in the past few months.
