CP Ships names vessels after national parks

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Aug. 15

CP SHIPS has named two vessels after India's well-know national parks, namely, Kanha and Corbett. And in line with the company's tradition, the names will be prefixed with "CP".

These are the first two of the nine 4,250-TEU capacity vessels ordered two years ago.

Thus, "CP Kanha" will be launched towards the middle of October this year and "CP Corbett" in January 2006 for deployment between the Indian Subcontinent and US East Coast ports.

All the nine vessels are currently under construction in Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries.

The remaining seven will be delivered by the second quarter of 2007, though their deployment is yet to be finalised.

With this acquisition, the shipping line's fleet size will rise to 20. At present, it has 11 vessels.

CP Ships currently operates weekly Indian Subcontinent-US East Coast service as part of the vessel sharing agreement with other carriers.

The port rotation is: Colombo-NSICT-New York-Norfolk-Charleston- Port Said-Colombo.

The service, marketed under the Contships and Lyka Lines, are operated with smaller, slower and costlier chartered ships.

"CP Kanha" and "CP Corbett" will replace the chartered ships and according to shipping line sources, guarantee improved transit time, larger capacity and more efficient service on the route.
