AI plans centralised office in Delhi

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , Aug. 15

AS part of its efforts to cut costs, Air India will soon move its entire staff from various locations in the Capital to one centralised point in the city.

The airline has already informed Life Insurance Corporation, the owners of Jeevan Bharati building in the heart of the city, about its decision to take more office space on lease in the building.

"The idea is to have two offices — one in the city and another at the airport here. This will enable us to cut costs as well as help ease logistical problems and also provide better utilisation of space. The move will be in keeping with what is done in every other city where the airline has only two offices generally located in the city and the airport," officials said.

AI has offices at present in at least four locations in the city all of which will move to the LIC building shortly.

The move is part of an overall strategy being drawn up by the top management to improve connectivity, expand the airlines' core area of activity so as to make better use of manpower available and improve bottomline.

The airline has already announced plans to expand its route network not only to existing destinations such as the US and UK but is also starting flights to new destinations including Mauritius and Seoul.

The airline, which has submitted proposals to the Government to purchase 68 new Boeing aircraft, has set aside almost Rs 300 crore for the refurbishment of its fleet of Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A 310 aircraft so as to considerably enhance its product and inflight services.

AI has hired a brand-building firm, Alia Group to assist the management in rejuvenating the brand, an exercise that is to cover route network, service on flight and on the ground among others areas.
