AP Cabinet authorises CM to decide on naxals

THE State Cabinet has empowered the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, to take an appropriate decision on dealing with naxalites. This could be re-imposition of the ban or any other option.

Briefing newspersons after the Cabinet meeting here on Tuesday, the Information Minister, Mr Mohd Ali Shabbir, said the Cabinet discussed the killing of the Congress MLA, Mr Narsi Reddy, and eight others by Maoists on Monday. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate the second phase of distribution of land to the poor during his visit to the State on August 21. He will visit Medak and distribute pattas. The State Government has decided to earmark Rs 250 crore as land development fund, Mr Shabbir said.

The Government has also decided to create a separate battalion comprising tribals. This would comprise 1,206 recruits from the various tribal regions of the State.
