Hyderabad varsity to set up centres of excellence

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug. 16

THE University of Hyderabad is setting up centres of excellence in nanotechnology and complex systems engineering and design with active participation of the industry.

While the Systems Engineering Centre would be a joint venture between the University and the Industry, the Nanotechnology Centre is expected to get support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), German Government and industry.

The University is discussing with companies such as Honeywell and Infotech Enterprises to launch a Post-Graduate course in Systems Engineering, the first of its kind in India. It is also interacting with the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, and the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, for the purpose.

Encouraged by the response from the Defence Research and Development Organisation, which is funding up to Rs 35 crore to set up the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials, the University has signed Memoranda of Understanding with several other corporates.

Pramati Technologies, Sierra Atlantic and Pacific Medical Centre are the major corporates with which the University has started joint projects. A Special Cell has been created to coordinate exclusively with the Department of Space, since more than a dozen projects have been sanctioned by the Indian Space Research Organisation to the University.

Starting at a research and development funding of Rs 24 crore at the beginning of the Tenth Plan, the University has reached a whopping Rs 120 crore at the end of the last fiscal, perhaps the highest R&D funding among all the Universities in the country.

To encourage entrepreneurship among students and researchers and start-ups, a Technology Business Incubator has been established in the University with the support of the DST. Plans are afoot to create special facilities such as clean rooms, better equipment to undertake research in nanotechnology, biosciences etc.
