People Tata Motors ED Sumantran resigns Our Bureau
Mumbai , Aug 16 DR V. Sumantran, Executive Director (Passenger Car Business & Engineering Research Centre), Tata Motors, has stepped down from his post. A company statement said today that he had communicated his decision to resign to pursue other interests and that the request had been accepted. "Dr Sumantran has been a member of the senior management team at Tata Motors and has contributed significantly to the company during his association. I wish him all success in his future career," said Mr Ratan Tata, Chairman, Tata group. Until recently, Dr Sumantran was one of three executive directors at Tata Motors, the others being Mr Ravi Kant - who headed the company's commercial vehicles business - and Mr Praveen Kadle, who oversaw finance and corporate affairs. On July 29, Mr Ravi Kant was elevated as Managing Director. Given the gaps in its management now, an official spokesman for Tata Motors said that a new organisational structure would be evolved in due course. "The company would make appropriate announcements once that is done. For the time being, the passenger car business and the ERC would report directly to the Managing Director," he added. According to him, the company would work out a mutually agreed date for Dr Sumantran's formal resignation. He refused comment on whether a successor would be in place by then. A product of IIT Madras with higher studies in aerospace engineering and a PhD in aerodynamics from the US, Dr Sumantran joined Tata Motors in November 2001 after more than 15 years at General Motors (GM). He had headed several projects in product research and development, advanced technology and engineering at GM. Once here, he divided his time between the Tata Motors office at Bombay House and the Engineering Research Centre (ERC) in Pune. Important product rollouts during his tenure at the apex of the passenger car business included the Indica V2, Indigo, Indigo Marina, Sumo Victa, and the Safari DICOR. It was also during the time of Dr Sumantran, a racing enthusiast, that the Tatas got into the Formula 1 racing scene, sponsoring Narain Karthikeyan.
