Events Pantaloon to make Rs 100-cr purchase at garment fair Anna Peter
Mumbai , Aug. 16
PANTALOON Retail (India) Ltd will be buying garments and merchandise worth Rs 100 crore at the three-day National Garment Fair being hosted by the Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India (CMAI) in Mumbai. According to Mr Rahul Mehta, Vice-President, CMAI, "Mr Kishore Biyani, the promoter of the company, has committed to placing orders worth Rs 100 crore. This is the first time that such a large order has been placed. His team is already here and we have built a separate area that includes a buying office, which will allow for on-the-spot vendor registration. In normal course such registration often takes about a month or more." He said: "This is a big boost. On average, in the past, the three-day event has attracted about Rs 250 crore in terms of order." However, most manufacturers and buyers are usually loath to share the value of their order size and it is difficult to assess how various participants have done in terms of attracting orders. He said that this year there had been fears that the turnout would be lukewarm because of the recent rains . However, representatives aresurprised that things are almost back to normal in terms of transport facilities, infrastructure and business operations in Mumbai. Word has been filtering out regarding this and is prompting a better turnout from retailers.Already, Mr Mehta said, turnout is at 75-80 per cent compared to previous fairs. The organisers are expecting it to "catch up" by the last day of the fair (August 18). This year, apart from a large number of domestic players, representatives of all the well-known retailers, such as Shoppers' Stop, Ebony, Globus and Westside, are also attending the fair. West Asian retailers such as Lulu's and Sorex Trading from Dubai are also turning up.
