SAVING energy is as important as generating it, said the Electricity Minister, Mr Aryadan Muhammed.
Inaugurating a workshop on `best practices in energy conservation', organised by the Thiruvananthapuram-based Energy Research Centre of the Central Power Research Institute in the city today, he pointed out that Kerala has been able to cut electricity transmission and distribution losses from 32 per cent in 2001 to less than 26 per cent at present.
In fact, the introduction of a scheme similar to the Central Government's Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (APDRP) can help the State save more power, he said.
A scheme similar to the APDRP is being formulated, he explained. The target is to ensure that all panchayats in Kerala are covered by the scheme in five years' time, Mr Muhammed added. If this target is achieved, the State's electricity transmission and distribution losses can be brought to below 15 per cent.
The Kerala State Electricity Board is beginning to focus on wind power, he added.
The three-day workshop will examine various aspects of energy conservation including energy management in buildings, salient features of the Energy Conservation Act, energy conservation in motors and so on.
Those who addressed the inaugural session of the workshop included Mr M.K.G. Pillai, Chairman, Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Mr A.K. Tripathy, Director General, Central Power Research Institute.
