Kochi , Aug. 18

THE Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, MR T.K.A. Nair, will inaugurate the launching of the first phase of the Sabarimala developmental projects at Nilakkal on August 21.

Mr G. Raman Nair, President of Travancore Devaswom Board, said that Nilakkal, 5 km from Pampa, would be developed as a permanent base camp for millions of pilgrims trekking to the forest shrine every year from mid-November to mid-January.

In the first phase, parking area for all types of vehicles would be developed. Besides constructing temporary pilgrim shelters, 400 toilets, primary health centres and drinking water facilities would be created, the TDB President said.

The existing 5-km road inside the newly acquired land would be widened before the commencement of the next season. At present, there is no permanent power supply system in the area and in order to create these facilities, the KSEB has agreed to set up a substation to bring power from Angamoozhy before the beginning of the season, Mr Nair said.

A master plan for developing the entire area of 110.52 ha at Nilakkal as a permanent base camp having all modern amenities/facilities for the pilgrims will be prepared by a Delhi-based consultancy, he said.

Besides, the Board is awaiting the release of 12.67 ha of forest land under the Periyar Tiger Reserve near Sabarimala Sannidhanam at Marakoottam where a `queue complex' and other facilities including healthcare units etc for the pilgrims would be constructed.

Construction of permanent structures at Sabarimala area and Nilakkal would be strictly in accordance with the master plan and it would be eco-friendly, Mr Nair added.
