Visakhapatnam , Aug. 18

THE Girijan Co-operative Corporation Ltd (GCC) here is planning to introduce several herbal products in the market and has sought financial assistance of Rs 59 crore from the Union Tribal Welfare Department to step up its activities and help Girijans, according to Ms Ratna Bai, the Chairperson of the GCC, and Mr A. Vidyasagar, Managing Director.

At a press meet here on Thursday, after announcing the launch of aloe vera soap, GCC said the Government had authorised the GCC to sell more than 30 products. "Aloe vera soap is our twenty-third product and we are hopeful that it will be well received in the market," they said.

Ms Ratna Bai said the GCC had appointed 200 distributors across the State. "The retail marketing division, set up in 2000, is doing well. The division's sales have gone up from Rs 1.5 crore in 2000-2001 to Rs 7.74 crore last year (2004-2005). A target of Rs 15 crore has been set for 2005-2006 and up to July this year, products worth Rs 1.81 crore have been sold," she said.

She said she had recently visited New Delhi and submitted a plea for Rs 59 crore to the Union Tribal Welfare Department "to improve the functioning of the GCC in all aspects".

Mr Vidyasagar said the aloe vera soap is priced at Rs 5 (50 g) and Rs 10 (100 g).

"Initially, we want to promote the product by offering free samples to the buyers of Girijan honey which was in great demand.

On the performance of GCC during the current year, Mr Vidyasagar said the projected turnover for the year (2005-2006) was Rs 325 crore and till July, Rs 53.48 crore had been achieved.

Last year it achieved a turnover of Rs 160.22 crore.
