Rs 400-cr package for urban drinking water projects in AP

Hyderabad , Aug.18

THE State Government plans to invest about Rs 400 crore to improve infrastructure in urban local bodies with special thrust on drinking water supply.

Reviewing the progress of these water projects at a meeting here on Thursday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S .Rajashekhara Reddy, directed officials to expedite implementation of various schemes already taken up for execution so that all towns are covered by 2009 as per the target set by the Government.

According to a press release from Chief Minister's Office, these projects would be funded through a combination of both Plan outlay and through financial assistance from agencies such as Hudco. This is in keeping with the Government's focus to provide protected drinking water to urban areas that are currently dependent on either monsoon or groundwater.

Given the serious threat of water borne infections, this project assumes importance. At present, 54 water supply schemes have been taken up with a total outlay of Rs 404 crore to add 336 million litres per day which will increase the supply from 74 litres per capita per day to 91. The programme envisages adopting new techniques in water supply, identifying new sources of supply for problematic municipalities.

Thus far about seven water supply schemes have been implemented under Plan budget with an outlay of Rs 17 crore. Further, under Hudco assisted programmes, 17 schemes have already been completed at a cost of Rs 141 crore while 21 are under progress.

Outlining the State's focus, Dr Reddy said "the ultimate goal is to provide 24x7 water supply in all the urban local bodies so that people do not suffer for want of this basic necessity. Mobilising resources and executing the schemes without time and cost overruns should be the focus area for officials."

Recently, schemes were sanctioned for Kondukur, Nellore, Vikarabad, Ananatapur, Guntakal, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Nandyal, Madanapalle and Palamaneru.
