MADURAI: The Levingipuram panchayat in Tirunelveli district is set to become the first civic body in the State to own a windmill and generate electricity. Situated on the border of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts in a viable windy zone of Muppanendal, known for generation of windpower, the panchayat's plan to establish a 225-KW windmill at a cost of Rs 95 lakh has been approved by the District Rural Development Agency.

This project will help meet the power requirements of the panchayat that has been paying Rs 9.37 lakh towards electricity bill every year.

While the panchayat will meet 25 per cent of the cost, the balance will be extended as a loan by State Bank of India.

According to DRDA Project Officer, Mr P. Ponnaiah, the panchayat, besides meeting its power requirements, is likely to get Rs.7.40 lakh revenue through sale of electricity to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Rs 2.70 per unit.
