Taxation Bengal concern over small rise in tax revenues Our Bureau
Kolkata , Aug. 18 THE West Bengal Government will, in the coming months, try to address what Mr A.K. Deb, Chief Secretary, described as a "disturbing" issue - a relatively modest increase in tax revenues despite a noticeable increase in production. West Bengal has in recent times recorded a smart improvement in terms of higher economic growth. However, the State has a somewhat delicate resource position, given its current financial profile. Yet, it is felt that there is an improvement on this front due to the local Government's efforts. The State, which controls over 60 companies operating in various industries, has directed its energies towards their restructuring, Mr Deb said, adding that the authorities have taken pains to improve their performance with regard to deficits. The 60 companies could be divided into three groups, including ones that need closure because they have become unviable. Two of these were closed down and the employees provided with a retirement scheme. In another group, the companies did have the right potential and could be turned into more viable entities, without sacrificing the State Government's holding in them. Four of these were recast - involving over 1,000 employees who were given a retirement package. The third group included companies that needed an induction of strategic partners. Ten of these are being recast with private sector assistance, Mr Deb said. He was addressing members of the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce on Thursday. Earlier, Mr A.V. Agarwal, President of the chamber, stressed the need for population control in West Bengal. The local Government should check infiltration from across the border, he said, adding that such infiltration creates political problems and instability.
