Bangalore , Aug. 18 IBM launched a Services Innovation and Research Centre in Bangalore on Thursday to develop technologies and solutions to improve operational efficiencies and delivery capabilities. The new centre, an extended arm of the New Delhi-based IBM India Research Lab (IRL), would work in close collaboration with IBM's Global Services Group that has a major presence in Bangalore, said the IRL Director, Mr P.S. Gopalakrishnan. IRL, one of the eight research labs of IBM, has 100 in India as against IBM's total R&D strength of 3,000. The new centre, to be headed by Dr Guruduth Banavar, would initially have ten people and would be scaled up later, Mr Gopalakrishnan. IBM expects to hire researchers with a variety of background, including distributed computing, software engineering and knowledge management, as well as domain experts in the areas of IT services for the new centre. Dr Krishna Nathan, Vice-President (Services), IBM Research Division, said the launch of new centre was part of a growing effort with IBM Research to increase the impact on IBM Global Services. The latest initiative was a major step by IRL in playing a critical role in delivering innovations to IBM and its clients. The centre would also focus on enhancing IBM's "On Demand" offerings in the services business by developing tailor-made solutions for its delivery groups, thereby adding greater value to the clients world over, he said.
