Petroleum Temporary LPG shortage in some areas: Aiyar Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 18 THE Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday that the public sector oil marketing companies have reported that there is no shortage of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He, however, clarified that some temporary shortages were experienced in certain areas of operation. The Petroleum Minister informed the members about the backlog being reported in certain areas of Maharashtra such as Mumbai, Solapur, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Pune and Nashik, which have been affected by heavy rain and flooding. He said that the situation is being closely monitored and normalcy is expected in the next 10 days. To make up for the shortfall, oil marketing companies are moving bulk LPG from Hazira, Jamnagar, Gandhar, Vagodia, Vijapur and Kandla to LPG-bottling plants in Maharashtra, Mr Aiyar informed the Lok Sabha. Currently, the backlog in Maharashtra ranges from three to eight days, he said. Similarly, in some parts of Kerala, a backlog in LPG supplies was reported owing to a strike by bulk LPG transporters from July 18 to 22 and another strike called by the Kerala Goods Transporters Association from July 31 to August 3. However, oil marketing companies reported that this backlog had been cleared and at present, there is no shortfall in LPG supplies in the State, the Minister said. A shortage of cooking gas with LPG distributors in Manipur had been reported due to an economic blockade on the National Highway by the All Naga Students Association of Manipur from June 19 to August 11. Although this blockade has been temporarily withdrawn, a bandh call has been reportedly given by the Sardar Hills District Demand Committee of Manipur from August 16 to 21, thereby affecting the movement of LPG trucks.
