To check the spread of AIDS, the US has joined hands with the National AIDS Control and representatives of the private sector. A corporate fund is being planned for this purpose, according to Dr David C. Mulford, US Ambassador to India.
The fund would be managed by a private financial institution and offer different options for corporate houses for contributions, either at the national, regional or local levels, he said.
Dr Mulford was addressing members of the CII at a national conference on HIV/AIDS on Thursday.
He said the US President, Mr George Bush, and the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, had agreed that the two countries would work together to tackle the disease. "There was specific agreement to explore new opportunities for public-private collaboration on development of medicines on AIDS, including increasing capacity in India to conduct clinical trials." According to him, Mr Bush had already announced a financial assistance of $7 million to improve preventive action against AIDS. It would include emphasis on workplace programmes.
"I hope Indian corporate leaders will join American businesses to respond with additional HIV/AIDS funding of their own", he said.
The ambassador further added that India was one of the five high-priority countries under Mr Bush's HIV initiative. His country would be providing $30 million towards AIDS control in India and US government agencies working in high-prevalence States, including the north-eastern States.
