Hyderabad , Aug. 19

THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will inaugurate Rajiv Internet village centres and Microsoft Office Telugu version on Sunday at Medak near Hyderabad.

The State Secretary Information Technology and Communication, Mrs K. Ratna Prabha, in a statement said Rajiv project conceived last year seeks to provide broadband connectivity to every village at an affordable price. These centres would enable to reach out services online to citizens and also impart computer literacy to at least one member of each family.

While TIMES, a non-government organisation, would be setting up 3,068 Rajiv centres in eight districts, public sector undertaking Bharath Electronics Ltd (BEL) would set up 5,550 centres in 14 districts by December 31.

The Prime Minister, in the presence of Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, would commission 200 centres on August 21. Apart from utility bill payment services, these centres offer weather insurance coverage, land records and information services, among others.

This is part of the AP Broadband project, work on which commenced in April 2005. By the end of October 2006, every village in the State will have optical fibre cable connectivity of 100 mpbs (mega bytes per second). Two principal Rajiv Internet Village partners have agreed to set up 8,618 village centres to offer Government to citizen and business to citizen services. These services would be offered at their doorstep.

Rajiv Internet Village is first such initiative in the country that seeks to leverage technology aimed at improving the rural economy and bridging the digital divide.
