`Austrian Airlines keen to expand services to South'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 19

AUSTRIAN Airlines, which will operate the Mumbai-Vienna route from September 1 this year, is keen to expand services to south India.

"We are keen to start operating to either Chennai or Bangalore as soon as possible. We would like to operate on our own and not in collaboration with Air India," said Mr Christian Schmid, Executive Vice-President, Sales and Passengers System. However, flights to Kolkata were not on the "radar screen" of Austrian Airlines for the present, officials said

Austrian Airlines joins a host of global airlines that have either started or are keen to operate to the southern States. The German airline Lufthansa has already announced plans to increase its operation to include a daily flight between Bangalore and Frankfurt.

Similarly, British Airways, Air France and the US-based North West Airline plan to either expand operations from and to south India or start flights from there.

The airline also plans to change the aircraft that it currently uses for the daily flight between Delhi and Vienna in November this year.

"We will operate a Boeing 767 aircraft to Delhi instead of the Airbus aircraft operated at present. Then 36 more seats will be available," Mr Schmid said.
