Villages must tap biogas for power needs, says PM

New Delhi , Aug. 20

THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said on Saturday that every village should have a community biogas plant of its own and electricity should reach every household.

Speaking on the occasion of the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urga Diwas 2005, Dr Singh said that more emphasis should be given to renewable energy sources. "It should be our objective that there is no village in the country without a community biogas plant. Micro-hydro projects in the hills and the use of bio-fuels should be encouraged," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, the Congress President and Chairperson of the National Advisory Council, Ms Sonia Gandhi, said that as world oil prices are sky-rocketing, renewable energy sources assume importance, which has also been stressed by the President in his Independence Day speech. Besides other uses, she said that renewable energy offers a solution to the serious problems of urban waste, which can be used for generating electricity and thus lead to a cleaner life. Ms Gandhi also administered a pledge to school children and others present on the occasion to promote renewable energy.

The Minister of State for Non-conventional Energy Sources, Mr Vilas Muttemwar, said that India has a huge potential of producing 2-3 lakh megawatts (MW) from non-conventional sources in the coming 20-25 years. Underlining the need to use solar, wind and biomass sources, he said that out of the present need of about 2.5 lakh MW of electricity, only about half is being met.

He said that his Ministry is working on providing grid-quality electricity to 25,000 remote villages, which cannot be connected with the grid — by 2012 through renewable energy sources. Mr Muttemwar added that Renewable Energy Clubs are being formed in 1,300 engineering colleges and technical institutions with a grant of Rs 25,000 a year by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, which will help develop renewable energy technology and present it as a career option. District Advisory Committees have been set up in 465 districts for accelerating the use of renewable energy devices and removing obstacles , he said.
