Posco deal

This refers to "Exporting iron ore is against national interest", (Business Line, August 17). Mr B. Muthuraman, MD, Tata Steel, has expressed concern over export of iron ore, stating that it should be discouraged as it is against national interest. If iron ore export is to be discouraged, all the steel producers in the country should extend a guarantee to the iron ore mine owners, that they will purchase the ore at prevailing international prices, as long as the stocks last. Such a guarantee will automatically put a stop to export.

Japan has been selling its steel production competitively in the international market despite importing all the raw materials. We may have to do the same if our inputs get exhausted.
