Bank unions plan protest against Govt policies

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Aug 21

THE United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) is planning a mass agitation against the Centre on trade union rights.

The forum has called upon the trade unions to strike work on September 29 to protest against the Second Labour Commission's recommendations and demand recognition of trade union work culture.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Shantha Raju, Convenor, UFBU said the unions were not happy with some recommendations such as the `hire and fire policy' and the strike ballot put forth by the Second Labour Commission.

"The Government is planning to make some amendments in the Industrial Disputes Act. We are opposing this move because the labour force is not stabilised yet."

Stating that the unions have a role to play, Mr Raju said the forum had been insisting that the Indian Banks' Association create a structure for periodic consultation with the unions.

The unions have, for instance, been demanding the appointment of an agency to study the technology initiative taken by banks.

"While the management is spending huge sums on technology, there is no agency to keep a watch on the investment," he said.
