Awards & Honours MAHE confers doctorate on Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Our Bureau
Manipal , Aug. 21 THE Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon Ltd, Bangalore, in recognition of her outstanding achievements in biotechnology and industrial enzymes. Speaking after receiving the honorary doctorate at a special convocation here on Saturday evening, Ms Shaw said that clinical trials are being hotly pursued as a lucrative business opportunity. However, the centres and medical investigators involved in this activity should focus on building high quality systems. They should build a strong research platform, which will enable India to assume high quality knowledge-intensive profile, she said. Ms Shaw said that the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) have been instrumental in the development of innumerable drugs marketed by pharma majors. These institutes, along with universities, have played a key role in incubating biotech start-ups. She said that 80 per cent of biotech companies in the US owe their origins to universities and research institutes. Stating that medical centres such as the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School have generated over the years, she urged MAHE to emulate such models. The Chancellor and Chairman of MAHE, Dr T. Ramdas Pai, conferred the doctorate on Ms Shaw. The Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, Dr H.S. Ballal, and the Vice-Chairman of Manipal AcuNova, Mr D.A. Prasanna, were present.
