Infrastructure CII urges TN to enact infrastructure growth enabling Act soon Our Bureau
Chennai , Aug. 21 TAMIL Nadu should speed up the process of enacting the Infrastructure Development Enabling Act as envisaged in its industrial policy. This will strengthen the institutional framework to enhance infrastructure in the State, according to the Confederation of Indian Industry (southern region). In a study on the status of Public Private Partnership (PPP) based infrastructure projects in the State, the CII emphasised the need for continual thrust to promote PPP in urban infrastructure. This is considering that Tamil Nadu is amongst the most urbanised States in the country with 44 per cent of population living in urban areas, against the national average of 28 per cent, says a CII press release. The CII urged the Government to take up the upgradation and maintenance of State highways, district roads and municipal roads under urban local bodies covering about 13,600 km in the States' six municipal corporations, 102 municipalities and 611 town panchayats. The State has to explore possibilities of setting up sector-specific industrial parks with world-class infrastructure in secondary cities and towns to leverage and support the production skills in textile, weaving, engineering and agro-processing. This would strengthen the entrepreneurial capacity and create common infrastructure for the industries, the CII said. It welcomed the State's initiative to create an infrastructure fund with an initial corpus of Rs 200 crore, the release says.
