Employment guarantee

The Centre's decision to introduce the Employment Guarantee Bill in Parliament may be good politics, but is certainly not good economics. It is not only important to give employment to people, but also to provide them with useful, productive and satisfying employment, and this requires careful strategies for job generation. While the government says that it would guarantee employment, it has not revealed any convincing strategies for generating jobs in a meaningful way.

In order to generate jobs, economic and industrial activities will have to be stepped up. Encouraging private enterprise and facilitating overseas investment in a big way is, therefore, important. Stepping up appropriate economic activities will create employment opportunities without costing the government crores of rupees.
